During
the Gulf War in 1991, musician Peter
McGowan
wrote a song in support of the troops who were thousands of miles away
from their families. He mailed hundreds of copies of “The
Soldier’s
Song” to military bases as gifts.
“I wanted
to write something that expressed the human emotions a young person
must
feel when they’re half way around the world and in enemy territory, he
explained.
McGowan,
the driving force behind the critically-acclaimed Celtic rock band Finn
MacCool, has revised “The Soldier’s Song” for 2003.
“I felt
it was especially important this time, when the country is so polarized
about the war. I believe that no matter how you feel politically
about the war, you still have to support the troops who are over
there.
Many of these soldiers are little more than kids, young people who were
at their senior prom a year ago. They have to feel scared, they
have
to wonder how people feel about them.”
