Wallace
McGowan/McGowan ©1998

The sword of William Wallace is displayed in a glass case at the Wallace Monument in Stirling.  At almost five feet long, it is the weapon of a giant, suited only to a man who was larger than life.   With this sword, the Guardian of Scotland defended the freedom of his people with a fierce passion that has never been matched in human history.  He was the warrior of his people.  He is a hero in our hearts.

Crossing the field at Sterling Bridge
the river runs red with memory
where once the crystal highland air
smelled strong of blood and victory

The presence of courageous men
stands taller than the ancient trees
one whispered name above them all
is carried on the Celtic breeze

What kind of magic does it take
to make a hero of a man
how pure the courage must one have
to carry out so great a plan

And if he hears my mortal question
let him answer from the sky
was it love that drove you on
or was it love that let you die

Do I know what my answer would be
if fate should ask the same of me
